It's said, "Great minds think alike."  This group of 1st and 2nd graders had no idea that they had be wearing the same Hannah Montana PJ's at the "Pajama Party" hosted by the Longoria Elementary library on Nov. 11. They giggled as they came into the room and saw each other. They did not hesitate to pose for the picture while they waited to get their popcorn and pickle treat for having passed their Raising Readers frequency words test. PSJA MIGRANT DIRECTOR RECEIVES THE 2009 TX MIGRANT EDUCATION ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD

PSJA's COLLEGE, CAREER & TECHNOLOGY ACADEMY, FINALIST FOR 2009 TEXAS HIGHER EDUCATION STAR AWARD

PHARR- The College, Career & Technology Academy is a finalist for the 2009 Texas Higher Education Star Award.

Raymund A. Paredes, Commissioner of Higher Education for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board congratulated Dr. Daniel King, PSJA Superintendent via a letter Sept. 29 for the program’s consideration as a finalist for the award.

PSJA ISD: GRADUATING COLLEGE READY, BI-LITERATE STUDENTS

PHARR- Forty-five students from PSJA High School and PSJA North High School completed the Dual Language Program at Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD in May 2009 and were the first cohort to graduate with this honor.
 
These students were part of this program since their kinder year and had devoted their time to the Dual Language curriculum since. They can now read, write and speak Academic English and Spanish fluently.

PSJA ISD SCHOOLS RECEIVE 124 GOLD PERFORMANCE AWARDS

PHARR – Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD schools received a record total of 124 commendations for Gold Performance Acknowledgements from the Texas Education Agency for the 2008-2009 school year.
 
The majority of these awards were for commended performances on various sections of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test. Others were for number of students in Advanced Courses, Attendance Rate and number of students in the Distinguished Achievement Program.

CANCER WALKATHON RAISES OVER $6,000 FOR TWO PSJA STUDENTS

PHARR – The non-profit organization Friends with Helping Hands, comprised of PSJA employees, most cancer survivors, helped raise over $6,000 for two PSJA students battling cancer and the Comfort House in McAllen during their 3rd Annual Cancer Walk-a-thon Saturday, Oct. 31.
 
Over 300 walkers showed their support by contributing their time and giving a special donation for this great cause.
 
According to Miriam Kellar, President of the organization and teacher at Pharr Elementary, the success of this walk was due to the support and generosity of the individuals that got involved and got others to contribute as well.
 
“We know that our efforts will make a significant difference in the lives of cancer patients,” she said.

PSJA ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPOINT FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT

PHARR – The Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD Board of Trustees have appointed Ramona Barron, the first woman to serve as President of the school board in the history of the school district.
 
Barron, school board member from Alamo, was appointed by her colleagues to serve as President of the PSJA school board for the 2009-2010 school year on Monday, November 9, 2009, during the board’s regular scheduled meeting.

JAMES BOWIE ELEMENTARY IN ALAMO RECEIVES NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL AWARD

ALAMO - James Bowie Elementary Principal Rosario Coplea and Facilitator Marissa Saenz traveled to Washington D.C. Nov. 3 to officially receive the National No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School Award from the United States Department of Education.

Three hundred and fourteen schools in the United States were given this designation, 264 of which are public schools.
For the past 27 years, more than 6,150 of America’s schools have received this coveted award.

PSJA MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT TO REPRESENT THE U.S. IN THAILAND

ALAMO - The Muay Thai Alliance of Texas (MTAT) and the United States Muaythai Federation (USMF), announced that Roel Alvarado, 10th grade student at PSJA Memorial High School, has earned a place on the United States National Team (Team USA) that will compete at the International Federation of Muay Thai Amateur (IFMA) World Championships in Bangkok, Thailand in honor and in celebration of H.M. the King of Thailand's Birthday on Dec. 5. SIXTY-FIVE PERCENT INCREASE IN NUMBER OF GRADUATES FROM PSJA ISD IN TWO YEARS
PHARR – PSJA ISD graduated 87 students at last night’s commencement summer exercises bringing the total number of PSJA graduates for the 2008-2009 school year to 1,595.
“This is a tremendous accomplishment,” Dr. Daniel King, Superintendent said. “PSJA ISD is truly stepping up and graduating more students each year.”
  The total number of graduates for 2008-2009 represent a 65 percent increase of number of annual graduates for PSJA in two years. In 2006-2007, 966 students received their diploma.

PSJA ISD SCHOOLS MEET ADEQUATE YEARLY PROGRESS

PHARR – Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standards in all areas required by the annual federal evaluation system and the No Child Left Behind Act. The Texas Education Agency released the listing of all campuses today.
 
All PSJA ISD high schools met AYP this year, including PSJA High School, which had been in Stage 5 last school year for missing AYP for the same indicator for six consecutive years. The school had to implement a major restructuring plan to meet AYP this year. With teamwork and an increase of one-to-one instruction in the needed areas, PSJA High School met AYP standards this year and received a Recognized rating from TEA.

PSJA ISD DOUBLES NUMBER OF CAMPUSES RECEIVING EXEMPLARY RATINGS FROM THE TEXAS EDUCATION AGENCY

PHARR –  Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD doubled the number of campuses receiving an Exemplary rating from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) this year, with a total of 11 campuses designated Exemplary and 15 receiving Recognized ratings.  TEA released the 2009 District Accountability Summaries today. Last school year, PSJA ISD had five Exemplary and 17 Recognized elementary campuses. Click here to read more...
